Wetlands are often described as ‘natural water filters’ – known to trap and remove sediments, nutrients, and pesticides from runoff before it reaches rivers and the Reef. But how much pollution is actually being filtered in Reef catchments?

According to the Scientific Consensus Statement released last year, the answer remains unclear. Most of what we know about wetland function comes from international studies, with few trials conducted in Queensland, and local results have been mixed.
This webinar explores recent projects investigating the key factors that influence a wetland’s ability to remove pollutants, why it is difficult to measure, how new results are informing Great Barrier Reef models, and where research gaps remain.
